Why do you own a tablet?

We just released our report “Tablet Computers:  Post-PC Wonderland or Utopia?” which discusses the rise of tablets and whether we’re headed for a time when tablets are the norm and traditional computers (desktops/laptops) are niche products. Our consumer data is derived from New Media Measure, our syndicated survey that examines attitudes and behaviors about myriad types of media, brands and more. Although NMM dives deep into what consumers do and think, we can’t measure everything. During discussions about this report, one of the questions I posed to our staff was this:

Why do you own a tablet?

We’d love to hear from our readers, Twitter followers and others about why they have a tablet (or why they don’t, if you’d like). Is it for convenience? Is it a must-have? Has it changed the way you use your “traditional” computer? Please sound off in the comments.

I received an iPad2 for Christmas this year. While “omg so cool” I really had no idea just how much I would use and love having one. Since I got mine, I honestly never go on my home laptop. I love the convenience of having the internet nearby at all times and being so handy. Because I can simply look something up, check email, play games, social network, etc. I find that I actually don’t spend as much time doing all of that if that makes any sense. It almost frees you up from spending time in front of a computer. After a day of working at one, it’s pretty much the last thing I want to do anyway.

Another thing….since having a wifi iPad, I was able to cut back on the data plan for my phone. I use the iPad only at home and my office or someplace else where wifi is readily available. Aside from the reduced eye strain of doing things on my phone, this saved us some money as well.

I own one for travel. It allows a better interface for email, news and media while on the go. It does not, however, replace my laptop or desktop.

Tablets are a convenient stepping stone to what will eventually equate to us having a local or cloud server with multiple access points to access our data. It introduces the concept of the cloud to the masses (iTunes) while offering a more accessible interface than a laptop and more in-depth access than a smartphone. In other words, it’s a niche product.

Eventually, the desktop, laptop, phone, TV and smartphone will all share one hub of data per user, but in my opinion never be the same device. Sometime’s we’ll need to type 85 wpm and sometimes we wont.

A lap top is a computer and a tablet is a toy that is fun to play with. That is the difference. One is a toy and one is a tool. Toy/Tool, see how that works.
